Tree and Shrub planting at Circle Creek Saturday December 6 2008, Circle Creek Conservation Center The Necanicum Watershed Council and North Coast Land Conservancy invite you to Give a Gift to Your Watershed this holiday season. On Saturday, December 6th from 9:30am to 2:30pm, please join us in planting native trees and shrubs along Circle Creek, to improve habitat for birds, fish, and other wildlife. This is a great opportunity to give something back to our watershed that provides us with the gifts of drinking water, wildlife habitat, agricultural lands, forestry resources, floodplain protection, and much more.
Circle Creek runs through a 364 acre property acquired by the North Coast Land Conservancy in 2004, with support from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and a variety of other public and private funding sources, right down to a community effort of car washes and a phone-a-thon to raise the last several thousand dollars. The Circle Creek property includes 1.3 miles of Circle Creek and 1.7 miles of frontage on the Necanicum River which host native runs of coho and chum salmon, steelhead, and cutthroat trout. The property also includes 160 acres of spruce swamp, a forested wetland type that has largely been eliminated from Oregon, about 60 acres of emergent wetlands and 70 acres of seasonally flooded pastures that provide important habitat for wintering waterfowl and other migratory birds. Other wildlife that use the area include two elk herds, black bear, cougar, bald eagles, frogs, and salamanders. We hope you will join us for this volunteer opportunity in a beautiful area.
