Be Kind to the Necanicum

Ways to Protect Your Watershed

There is much that visitors and residents can do to protect Seaside's watershed! Our water comes from the South Fork of the Necanicum, a vital salmon spawning and rearing stream. Together, we can keep our streams cold, clear, and healthy for fish and wildlife year-round.

Conserve Water

The City of Seaside relies on the South Fork of the Necanicum for its water supply. During summer and peak visitor seasons, water levels can drop dangerously low. Conserving water, especially in these months, helps maintain cold, clean streams that protect our fish.

Tips to conserve water

  • Use water-efficient appliances and fixtures

  • Limit outdoor watering, especially in summer

  • Fix leaks promptly

  • Collect rainwater for gardening

Leave No Trace

What happens on land in our watershed eventually affects our water quality. Protecting clean water starts with you!

How to minimize your impact

  • Minimize pesticides and toxins in your yard

  • Never pour chemicals down drains

  • Consider native landscaping to reduce water use and pesticide needs

  • Keep vehicles well-maintained to avoid oil leaks

  • Avoid washing your car with soap that can enter storm drains

  • Always pick up pet waste

Respect Wildlife

Our watershed is home to many species that depend on a healthy environment.

Be a responsible visitor and resident

  • Follow ODFW regulations when harvesting fish or wildlife; always have a license

  • Avoid disturbing wildlife; keep a safe distance from seals and other animals

  • Keep pets leashed to prevent disturbance

  • Protect threatened snowy plovers by avoiding grassy dunes from March 15 to September 15

Landowners

If you live on a creek or river, your stewardship is crucial.

Best practices for landowners

  • Maintain a riparian buffer of native vegetation to shade and protect the creek

  • Leave natural logs, branches, and rocks in the stream to create fish habitat

  • Control invasive species and plant native plants to support ecosystem health

Give back

Supporting your local watershed council is one of the most effective ways to protect our watershed.
